Despite recent notes of dissent from Robin van Persie, the Manchester United striker appears to be in it for the long run at Old Trafford. Responding to questions about his future at the club, the Netherlands international claimed to be “very happy” with the Red Devils and would consider staying past the end of his current contract.
Van Persie signed a four-year deal when he moved west from Arsenal in the summer of 2012. Though his first year in Manchester produced a Premier League winner’s medal, this season could see him left without Champions League soccer for the first time since moving to England.
Amid criticism of teammates after United’s 2-0 loss in Greece, mounting speculation questioned whether the potentially Europe League-bound Red Devils could keep their biggest goal scoring threat at the club.
“The truth is I’m very happy at this club,” Van Persie told United Review, the club’s programme, in an interview for Sunday’s match against Liverpool. “I signed for four years and I’d be delighted to stay even longer, beyond the next two years I have left on my contract. The Guardian has more from Van Persie’s interview, and while you could question the context of his remarks (how critical can somebody be in their club’s game day program), his words strike a particularly strong note. At a minimum, the interview should carry more weight than anonymously sourced reports that the veteran striker will look for a new home after the World Cup.
